Moving to Australia with an overseas licence? This 2025 guide shows how long you can drive before converting, where to book tests, who needs translations/IDP, and the key road rules to avoid fines.

Time Limits by State and Territory (residents)

Once you move to live in a state/territory, you must convert within that state’s window. Visitors often have different rules (see note below).

State/Territory How long you can drive on an overseas licence after moving Source
NSW 3 months for citizens/PR before transfer. Some pages refer to up to 6 months depending on status; follow Service NSW instructions when you book. Service NSW
Victoria 6 months if living in VIC for 6+ months. VicRoads
Queensland Must transfer when you become a resident. Guidance references a 3-month residency rule. QLD TMR
Western Australia 3 months from moving to WA to live. WA DoT
South Australia Must transfer to continue driving; timing set by SA rules at application. SA.GOV.AU
Tasmania Convert if staying long term; process and checks depend on country. Transport TAS
ACT 3 months for permanent visa holders, then ACT licence required. Access Canberra
Northern Territory 3 months then transfer to NT licence. NT Government

Visitors note: Many states allow visitors to drive on an overseas licence while it remains valid. Exceptions: NT ~3 months; NSW/VIC ~6 months. Always check local rules if staying longer.

How to Convert Your Licence

  1. Check your state page for time limits and booking links (Service NSW, VicRoads, QLD TMR, WA DoT, SA, TAS, ACT, NT).
  2. Prepare documents: passport, current overseas licence, visa/residency evidence, local address, English translation or IDP if your licence is not in English.
  3. Identity and eye test at a service centre. Medical assessment if declared/required.
  4. Knowledge/Hazard/Drive tests if your country is not exempt or rules require re-testing.
  5. Pay fees and receive your state licence card. Overseas-licence authority to drive ends once a local licence is issued.

Recognised Countries and 2025 Policy Changes

  • Austroads reform (2025): the previous Experienced Driver Recognition settings ended on 30 Apr 2025 in most jurisdictions. NSW and WA set transition deadlines to 31 Oct 2025. Queensland implements through late 2025. Tasmania to advise implementation date.
  • Victoria: from 1 May 2025, several countries require tests to convert (e.g., South Korea, South Africa, Taiwan, many EU states listed by VicRoads).
  • WA: separate transition for residents with EDR-listed licences until 31 Oct 2025.

Translations and International Driving Permit (IDP)

If your licence is not in English, provide a NAATI-certified translation or an International Driving Permit plus the original licence when driving and at conversion.

Essential Road Rules to Know

  • Left-side driving. Obey posted limits. Where no sign, NSW default is 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h elsewhere. School zones are typically 40 km/h during signed times.
  • Mobile phones: Learner/P-plate drivers in NSW must not use a phone in any way, including hands-free or in a cradle, even when stopped.
  • Alcohol: General limit 0.05 BAC. Learners and provisional drivers: 0.00 BAC in most jurisdictions.
  • Carry your licence at all times. Use seatbelts for all occupants.
Tip: Book early. Test availability can tighten after policy changes. Keep your overseas licence valid until your local licence is issued.

FAQs

Can visitors drive indefinitely on an overseas licence?

Often yes, while the licence remains valid. Exceptions: NT ~3 months; NSW and VIC ~6 months. Long stays usually require conversion as per state rules.

Do I need an IDP?

If your licence is not in English, many states require a NAATI translation or IDP. Bring both IDP and the physical home-country licence.

What if my country lost “automatic recognition” in 2025?

You may need to sit knowledge, hazard perception, and/or a drive test. Check your state page and Austroads updates.

When does my authority to drive on an overseas licence end?

When a state licence is issued to you, your authority to drive on the overseas licence in that state ends.
