Start with the right temporary visa. Plan your PR pathway on day one.

This 2025 guide maps Australia’s main work visa pathways: the new Skills in Demand (subclass 482) for employer sponsorship, points-tested PR via 189/190, the regional 491→191 route, and the Temporary Graduate 485 path for recent graduates. It also highlights income thresholds, recent reforms, and practical steps to move from a temporary visa to permanent residence.

What Changed in 2025

  • Skills in Demand (SID) visa replaced TSS 482 in Dec 2024. SID remains subclass 482 with new streams and clearer PR pathways.
  • Salary floors indexed: from 1 July 2025, the TSMIT/CSIT for most employer-sponsored nominations is AUD 76,515; the Specialist Skills threshold is AUD 141,210 for 2025–26.
  • ENS 186 TRT access widened and work requirement is two years across streams for eligible 457/TSS/SID holders.
  • Global Talent 858 closed to new applications on 6 Dec 2024. Replaced by the National Innovation visa (subclass 858).
  • Temporary Graduate 485 streams renamed and rules tightened from 1 July 2024; English settings updated in 2025.

Pathway 1 — Employer-Sponsored: Skills in Demand (subclass 482) → ENS 186

The Skills in Demand visa is the main temporary work visa. It has three streams with different settings and income floors:

  • Core Skills stream: occupation must be on the evolving Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL); salary must meet the Core Skills/TSMIT for the year.
  • Specialist Skills stream: high-earning roles. Salary must meet the Specialist Skills Income Threshold for the year.
  • Labour Agreement stream: for employers with an approved agreement.

Stay: up to four years. Processing: the government targets faster standards for Specialist/Core streams, but real times vary.

PR via ENS 186 (Temporary Residence Transition)

  • Who: eligible holders of 457/TSS/SID who have worked in the nominated occupation in Australia for 2 of the last 3 years.
  • Streams: TRT or Direct Entry. TRT has the broader access after 2023–2024 changes.
  • Sponsorship: you must be nominated by an employer meeting salary and market rate tests.
Income floors 2025–26: CSIT/TSMIT = AUD 76,515. Specialist Skills threshold = AUD 141,210. Some Labour Agreements specify different settings. Always meet the higher of market salary rate or threshold.

Pathway 2 — Points-Tested PR: 189 vs 190

The Skilled Independent 189 is permanent and requires an EOI and invitation through SkillSelect. No state nomination. The Skilled Nominated 190 is also permanent but requires state nomination and a commitment to live and work in that state. Both require a skills assessment, English, and points eligibility.

  • 189: live and work anywhere in Australia. Competitive invitations. Focus on high points and targeted occupations.
  • 190: nomination criteria vary by state (residency, occupation lists, work/study in-state). Strong for applicants with local ties.

Pathway 3 — Regional Route: 491 → 191

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) 491 is a five-year visa tied to designated regional areas. With three years of regional residence and other eligibility met, you can apply for PR via 191.

  • 491: requires state nomination or family sponsorship in a regional area; work and residence conditions apply.
  • 191: for eligible 491/494 holders who have lived and worked in designated regional areas and meet the visa criteria at time of application.

Pathway 4 — Graduates: 485 → 482/Points/Regional

The Temporary Graduate 485 visa aligns to study level since 1 July 2024 and has updated English and age settings. Use 485 to gain experience and convert to 482 (SID), 189/190, or 491 depending on occupation and points.

  • Streams: Post-Higher Education Work, Post-Vocational Education Work, and Second Post-Higher Education Work.
  • Key updates: higher English requirement and streamlined eligibility rules from late 2024–2025.
